Reacting to a report by The Washington Times and ABC News, Sen. Barack Obama condemned the government's practice of recruiting mentally ill veterans for drug trials and plans to investigate further.
Obama, a member of the Senate Veterans' Affairs Committee, said he plans an investigation into the tests.
"It is outrageous and unacceptable that our government would irresponsibly endanger veterans who have already sacrificed so much for our country," Obama said in a statement. "I will immediately be asking for a full and thorough investigation of how our government could yet again let down our veterans and their families who have given so much to their country, and who have paid so much for the failures of civilian leadership in Washington."
UPDATE: Obama's office just sent a letter to James Peake, secretary of the Department of Veterans Affairs, on the issue. You can read the full text of the letter here.
UPDATE II: Sen. John Cornyn, Texas Republican, issued his own letter to Peake as well. You can read it here.
