It's difficult to quantify the outrage I feel every time I hear another pronouncement from this incompetent poseur we are required to tolerate as our President. Although it's a matter of little consequence that the Democrats share a good size chunk of the responsibility for high energy prices, to hear the guy who has single handedly orchestrated the current smorgasboard of disasters that face our country arrogantly blame someone else for not doing something that, by the way, will do absolutely nothing to correct the problem either, is utterly infuriating.
I hope we as a country have the presence of mind to declare January 20th, 2009 a de-facto national holiday, complete with fireworks and spontaneous celebrations in the streets as we send this little man (who I voted for in 2000) back to his ranch in Texas. May he stay there quietly until the newly constituted DOJ gets around to calling him back to Washington to answer for his crimes.
Living in the SNOW/COLD BELT.. $5 a gallon for heating oil is going to be a real hardship.
We have built an oil based society and culture.
Our options are rather limited in the short term.
If we opened up ANWAR and the offshore for drilling.. Oil prices would start to go down the next day..
Even if we never put a drill bit in the ground
Limited supply and increased demand.
Means higher prices..
Guess you need someone to blame, other then ourselves.
Its about time GWB roles out this concept. Converatives have been saying this for 20 years. The DEMOCRATS have blocked any type of Domestic Energy development for 30 years so they can "Socialize" and confiscate the profits of the Energy producers. Interesting that the government makes more profit than the oil companies on a gallon of gas. All the government did was stand in the way of cheap safe production. If you like $4+ Gas prices THANK A DEMOCRAT! Lefties only give us problems w/o solutions other than to Socialize it and really screw it up. Drill Here Drill Now Pay Less !!
Time for some RHINO's and other so called Republicans to stand up and support this - Get a backbone and do what Ronald Reagan would have done !!
oldarmy: No, I agree with you, we are entirely to blame.
However, part of what we are to blame for is our willingness to accept sound bites from methodically dishonest people like George W. Bush, who knows full well that further investment in oil drilling will divert our resources and the attention of the public away from the critical energy and climate challenges we face. I'm sure you're right, if we opened up drilling oil prices would dip a little bit, perhaps push the cost of heating oil back to $4.25 for awhile. However, it would do nothing to remedy the strategic malignancy created by our dependence upon importing oil.
We are literally watching "global war 3" coalesce in the Middle East as we speak. Because we did not focus our attention on winning in Afghanistan (which I believe we could have), we are now losing ground we took earlier, and stumbling towards a military confrontation with Pakistan. And yes, I blame that on George W. Bush.
The so-called war on terror which was supposed to make us safer, has produced the opposite effect, because George W. Bush chose to justify it on the basis of lies (specifically, representing the threat of WMD as a 'virtual certainty' instead of a 'plausible conclusion', as our intelligence services actually characterized it). He has destroyed our moral credibility with literally every population of foreign citizens in the world by his use of kidnapping, torture, and unlawful incarceration of innocent non-combatants in what amounts to an American Gulag in Guantanamo Bay. The only thing we're not sure of is how many of them there are. (I only know of two for sure, Mr. Kurnaz and Mr. Al-Masri, both from Germany, abducted while on vacation, nowhere near Afghanistan or Iraq, or any field of battle). And he has put in place the most invasive extra-judicial hardware infrastructure for spying on American citizens ever conceived, and used it to imprison innocent American citizens among others (if you want a name, try Brandon Mayfield, an attorney who lives here in Portland.)
Our economy has been crippled by a government which has added $6-Trillion in debt in order to fund it's operation over 8 years, and there is no end in sight. The forecast deficit for this year is $409-billion, and we are now about $250-billion away from running out of borrowing authority. Just one of the major consequences of that financial plunder has been the devaluation of the dollars you use to buy heating-oil. So whatever benefit you think you may get by enabling more domestic drilling, the Bush economic policies, if allowed to continue, will continue to dissipate the real value of your assets and your paycheck, and energy costs will continue to correct for that dilution upwards, probably faster than any cost of living increases we may receive. I blame that on George W. Bush, and Congress (both parties, in equal measure).
Our economy is on the minds of most all Americans. The foremost issue at hand is the price of gasoline. Obama, along with almost all of Washington, DC Capitol Democrats have time and time again voted to deny drilling for additional known oil established finds. At the same time, almost all Republicans vote for drilling for additional known oil, in an effort to make more gasoline readily available at reduced prices.
Every time each consumer goes to the gasoline pumps for escalating gasoline prices, they should thank the Democrats. When they go to purchase food and other goods for necessities, they should thank the Democrats. It is the Democrat Party who votes to refuse drilling for oil, which will bring down prices and preserve existing jobs as well new jobs.
All we have to do is drill, remove, and refine it. Gasoline prices of today are hurting our American economy by costing jobs in the workplace, whether they are employed with a “mom & pops” community store, or in the larger manufacturing plants. The escalating prices of gasoline are causing increased prices in food and every other product which requires gasoline and/or fuel oil in transportation getting the goods to the market.
Drilling and extracting new oil resources will restore existing jobs and create new jobs for Americans.
America can blame majority Democrats in the US Senate for the escalating prices of gasoline, attempting to destroy our whole economy. Working citizens are forced to purchase gasoline, food, as well as other necessities such as Healthcare, and additional supplies.
How high does the price of gasoline have to reach for the Democrats on Capitol Hill to start voting to allow American oil companies to drill for new oil? When will Americans recognize that the problem with the price of gasoline lies at the feet of Capitol Hill Democrats? When will Capitol Hill Democrats help the American economy, creating jobs for our populace consumers, by added gasoline more available at a reduced cost effective price of gasoline?
If the U.S. grants amnesty and gives citizenship to 12 to 30 million illegal migrants, as Senators Obama and McCain propose. Those naturalized citizens could possibly add 120 million U.S. and foreign-born relatives to the U.S., in the next 20 years who all consume energy. Then again, if America adopt the SAVE ACT and millions of illegal aliens leave these shores, gas would be more obtainable.
Our highways are clogged with vehicles, but since Arizona started clamping down on illegal workers, the road traffic has thinned out. NUMBERSUSA. Tell everybody..!
Drill, Tax Gas, Go Nuclear
Drill for the damn oil! It's the property of the American people and it doesn't belong to the Democratic party! It belongs to all of us and the Democrats are keeping it off limits, simply for political reasons.
I'm tired of hearing about the BILLIONS of barrels of oil that are available for extraction here in America and that sit untapped simply because some politicians are using it as a tool to punish the American oil companies and the GOP. You're harming us all with this partisan game and I hope this blatant disregard for American economic independence is going to back fire on you this election.
I have another idea why the Democrats are willing to block drilling and let prices to go through the roof and further damage the economy. Their modus operandi has always been to create dependency and are just waiting to provide all kinds of relief and benefits to lower income citizens for the spiraling energy costs that they themselves have created. Additionally, they can't stand the idea of Republicans leading the charge to provide some relief this close to the election and expose the Democrats for what they really are.
"And the Energy Information Administration says that even if we do open the coasts to oil drilling, prices wouldn't drop until 2030."
If the Energy Information Administration is so good at forcasting prices 20+ years out, why didn't they forcast $4 a gallon gasoline 20 years ago?
Saying the U.S. has only "3 percent" of the world's oil resources is quite misleading (on purpose I am sure). This obviously refers to proven reserves. Until one drills and finds oil, the reserves stay at 3 percent. Look at Brazil. The large find off their Atlantic coast was not part of their reserves either. Until that field was discovered, their share of the world's proven reserves was well under ours. Once the field was found, their proven reserved jumped by about 10 billion barrels. After a few more exploratory wells, that has jumped to over 90 billion barrles.
Also the 3 percent figure obviously does not account for oil shale, which experts claim contain more oil that the Saudi fields.
We don't count the shale oil, have no idea how much ANWR will add to our reserves. Nor how much off shore fields would add to our reserves for a simple reason. We don't even look.
Lies, damn lies and statistics.
I think one poster said it all and has a great bumber sticker idea to boot when they said to thank a Democrat if you like $4 a gallon gasoline.
The facts as I see them:
• Gasoline, diesel, natural gas and aviation fuel prices are at all-time highs. Americans are being forced to change their lifestyles to make up for additional expenses as a result of the high price at the pump.
• The cost of fuel has doubled since the Democrats assumed control of Congress less then two years ago.
• The United States has an estimated 1.8 trillion barrels of oil off its coasts as well as in northern Alaska and the Rocky Mountains; this amount is 3 times greater than the proven reserves of Saudi Arabia.
• 73% of Americans support drilling in presently restricted areas of the United States if it is done in an environmentally-friendly way.
• Recent advances in technology now protect against major oil spills into the ocean. Today, we have environmental safeguards to protect against disasters while drilling. This technology uses a “shut-in” system that immediately stops the flow of oil from the ocean floor if the pump is disconnected, preventing major oil flow into the water. This system proved to be successful in the Gulf of Mexico during Hurricane Katrina, one of the most destructive storms in recorded American history. The absence of spillage from rigs in the Gulf of Mexico following Hurricane Katrina is a testament to the strength of the environmental safeguards now in place.
• One needs to look no further than Brazil to determine the incredible effects that can come from domestic drilling. Upon discovering two large oil fields in the Atlantic, Brazil began drilling and is now 100% energy independent from nations such as Saudi Arabia, Iran and Iraq.
• Congress must act immediately to allow exploration of new resources in America. It is time to make searching and drilling for oil in the Atlantic, Pacific, eastern parts of the Gulf of Mexico, northern Alaska and the Rocky mountains legal. With environmental precautions in place, such drilling will lower fuel prices and boldly enhance our nation’s independence.
Democrat Party Presidential nominee Barack Obama continues to say “NO” to oil exploration, although our gasoline prices are at $4.00/gallon and going higher. President Bush is now asking for legislation to allow for drilling for oil offshore. The Democrats on Capitol Hill continue to say “NO, NO, NO”.
It is becoming apparent the only reason for Democrats decision is to destroy America’s economy and blame George Bush. Do the Democrats on Capitol Hill hate America to the point that they will destroy America and help the Islamic Arab nations of Iran, Syria, and the terrorists in Iran and Afghanistan? The Democrats may blame President Bush, but American voters must not allow the Democrat Party to get away with that issue as they destroy our US economy.
American consumers are now lacking the ability to purchase otherwise smaller items, not to mention the big items such as appliances, automobiles, and others in between. American consumers are being economically squeezed, just because of the cost of gasoline. Americans are being stretched out of their budgets by the ever-increasing cost of oil and gasoline!
Jobs are being lost, just because the consumers lack the resources to purchase normal products, thus leaving the services and manufactured products unsold. For that, we the American voter, can say “thank you, but no thank you” on November 4, 2008 to the Democrat leaders and their following on Capitol Hill.
The cure is for America to drill and capture our own “known oil reserves”. Capturing “known oil reserves” can reduce oil and gasoline prices, make our government “oil independent” from OPEC nations, and rectify an error for our entire citizens and our economy. Recent reports now shows America has more oil reserves than the entire Arab nations combined.
Barack Obama has voted “NO”, “NO”, “NO” on additional exploration. How many times has most other Democrats voted “NO”?
Democrats on Capitol Hill continue to say that drilling, extracting, and refining oil is not the answer to bring down the prices of gasoline. That is just not true!
If one farmer has 1 million bushels of wheat, and there is a demand for 1.5 million bushels of wheat, the one farmer can sell it at about any price he demands. If, all of a sudden, two additional farmers show up with 1 million bushels of wheat each, and the same total demand is of 1.5 million bushels, the prices of wheat comes down. We now have three farmers to sell a total of 3 million bushels of wheat. All three farmers are trying to market their own wheat where only 1.5 million bushels will be sold and/or purchased. The price of wheat is lowered so as each may sell wheat.
Harry Reid better check his facts from the EIA. Often oil companies don't drill on leased land because geological studies indicate that they cannot hit oil on those leases. Pelosi should know this - I bet she does know it, but is blowing smoke to support her environmental lobby.
The latest argument being made by some who do not wish to drill for oil domestically both offshore and onshore, is that there are simply not enough ocean going drilling vessels to meet the need.
The U.S. shipbuilding industry, once robust and a world leader, is now nearly gone. A combination of international cost economics and union rules made this industry shrivel up. If it was not for the few military ships being built and refitted, it would have blown away. This is a JOBS opportunity!
Our energy circumstances are calling for drilling both onshore and offshore and a need for ocean going drilling ships. This is a grand opportunity to rebuild the U.S. Shipbuilding industry and create good paying career oriented jobs in the process. These circumstances have placed this opportunity right on our doorstep. Now the question must be asked. What other job opportunities will arise from the search for domestic oil? How many related jobs will be in need of U.S. workers to fill them? The entire supply chain for the drillers and the ship builders, plus the entire delivery chain for both will be, itself, a massive mostly self financed jobs program offering the type of jobs that are the backbone of the American middle class. These jobs would reverberate through the Midwest, especially Ohio, and the Katrina ravaged Gulf Coast. These jobs would require skills to be acquired through training. How about a jobs training program for these and related industries to make these jobs happen? Training means trainers and yet more skilled jobs.
