This is why I took my family out of the Richmond Diocese! Most of those in this diocese, including clergy, need to be suspended or fired. Come to the Arlington Diocese -- it's very much alive!

cpa, Ricmond to Arlington = Frying pan to Fire. Have you not read about Bishop Loverde in the Washington Post? Be vigilant!

A classic example of the failure to lead and the failure to accept responsibility. Why would anyone want to follow a bishop who simply passes the buck to others? As a first step to fix the problem, he should resign.

He didn't know it could be stopped? That's absurd. If the young woman doesn't show up the following day, the procedure doesn't happen. I think this is an excuse to make him look less culpable. Clearly he knew it was going to happen and could have stopped it by giving a directive to the staff. The fact that 4 staff members took the fall for his and the director's lack of action is incredibly wrong. He should resign, and she should be fired.

Article says: "Those who obtain an abortion or help someone else to do so can be excommunicated." Wrong. According to the Catechism of the Catholic Church, #2272: "A person who procures a completed abortion incurs excommunication latae sententiae", that is, AUTOMATICALLY, and that is if the abortion is procured for oneself or for someone else. Being involved at all means automatic excommunication.

Why the rush to abort? Maybe it was Bishop DiLorenzo's child? In the Boston Archdiocese two years ago employees of Catholic Charities where caught bringing pregnant woman to abortion clinics.

The negligence of the Bishop is inexcusable. He must be removed as the leader of the diocese. A courageous bishop would have left his residence and placed him self between the girl and the aboritorium. He would have gone to jail to prevent the death of the child caused by CCR. With a "Shepard" like this, the diocese is in deep trouble. This story also points up the moral corruption withing the US Catholic Charities organization. It is permeated with people who are not aligned with Catholic belief. I stopped donating to them years ago.

Dear Bishop DiLorenzo, Please use this disgraceful and hurtful episode as an opportunity to show that you truly care about the Faith and the members of this diocese who look to your office for leadership and trust: RESIGN. Your actions/lack of actions in this event and in many others have caused countless families great pain in our region, and we are helpless to force a change in your office; you must set the example to put the needs of others before the wishes of the self. We beg you to turn our diocese over to the flock, let us pick up the pieces, and let us be served by a new appointee. God bless you. Let us go.

This Bishop should be fired. It's time for the Catholic faithful to speak out against bishops that fail in their duty to uphold Catholic Doctrine and Tradition. Time for change. Iowa Mike

Please do something about these bishops who ignore the teachings of the Catholic church and the commandments. "Thou shall not kill"

As a member of the laity I am beyond shocked and appalled by the state of our Episcopate in this country. If outward appearances are any indication they are, with only a handful of exceptions, cowards who either do not believe in, or are afraid to proclaim, the fullness of the Truth. One of the best of them, Archbishop Burke, has just been moved to Rome. Te Deum! But that means we don't have him here. And the USCCB cannot afford to lose one of the only good men they have. Abortion is murder. The Bishop allowed a murder to occur in his diocese and HE DID NOTHING. Not surprising. These are the same men who did nothing during the sex abuse scandal. The Bishop should resign immediately. This happened on his watch, and he is ultimately responsible. Do not expect him to resign though. To hold himself accountable would require integrity. Perhaps this will be an occasion for repentance. Perhaps his excellency will stop protecting the lavender mafia, and support the Holy Father. Perhaps TRUE liturgical "renewal" (read an end to liturgical abuse and a restoration of the Church's Tradition) will occur due to this shameful episode. Of course, that require a) the Bishop believe what the Church has always taught and b) that he is faithful to the Holy Father and the Motu Proprio. Don't hold your breath.

Sorry to add another comment on the heels of my last. I think it may be that the Bishop, the entire Catholic Charities organization, and anyone involved in this awful business MAY be excommunicated latae sententiae. We need an example of public penance. Ultimately, it is the Bishop's brother Bishops who would hold him accountable. Don't hold your breath on that one either.

I'm sorry - what does that mean? Nothing he could do? The child was in the custody of HIS agency! HIS staffers signed for the child to have the procedure (illegally) (immorally) - what in blue blazes is he talking about? If my sister, friend, next-door-neighbor told me that tomorrow they had a plan to do this thing - that would be A CLUE - there's still time to prevent the murder of the innocent unborn child! Hello? So - do we have a bishop that threw up his hands and stood by and did nothing, while he knew an abortion was actively happening to a specific child? And does that mean that he is not excommunicated? And what is his agency DOING? Providing birth control devices and abortions to minors in their custody anyway? Are they insane? Is he blind? Lord have mercy!

It’s about time he was exposed for being the cowardly, self-serving individual that he is. It’s as if the laity of the Richmond Diocese has consistently looked the other way when it comes to his unholy actions and finally they can no longer do so. But wait, it is the laity of the Richmond Diocese, so yes; I suppose they can continue to look the other way! After all, whatever Steve Neill (the Diocesan whip) says must be the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth, right?

Great to read so many spot-on comments here. As a member of his diocese, I've made the decision if he doesn't resign, I will leave his diocese and join a neighboring one. I'll be traveling farther, but more importantly, not contributing to his collection plate. The quotes attributed to him and Neill etc. are insulting to the Church and every member of its body. Let's pray for the baby and the baby's mother.
