SEEN AND HEARD IN VIERA, FLA.

METS 7, NATIONALS 3

Washington’s hitters could do nothing against New York starter Oliver Perez, who retired the first 11 batters he faced, five on strikeouts. Only Ryan Zimmerman (2-for-4, RBI in his first game back from a tight hip flexor) looked comfortable at the plate against the left-hander.

Nationals lefty Mike O’Connor wasn’t nearly as effective, allowing five runs (four earned) on seven hits in 42/3 innings. He wasn’t aided much by his defense, which committed three errors (two by shortstop Cristian Guzman).

TEMPERATURE CHECK

DOWN — Nationals’ losing streak

Loss to Mets is fourth straight for Washington.

UP — Nationals/Mets connection

A combined seven players and Acta have worn both uniforms.

DOWN — Bret Boone

Starting to look more like a guy who hasn’t played in two years.

DOWN — Green hats

St. Patrick’s Day specials clash with the blue and red jerseys.

OVERHEARD

“I wish I could throw him out there tomorrow, but I can’t. Not in my heart, I can’t. Not in my heart or my brain.”

— Pitching coach Randy St. Claire after watching injured right-hander Shawn Hill throw off a bullpen mound yesterday

BY THE NUMBERS

1 Baserunner Chad Cordero has allowed in six spring training appearances.
