THE BUZZ

Up- XAVIER/WEST VIRGINIA

The Musketeers and Mountaineers return to the Sweet 16 for the first time since 2004 and 2005, respectively.

Down- OFFICIATING

It stunk the entire weekend. Yesterday’s games struggled to find a flow, and the four teams were called for a combined 92 fouls.

Even- EXCITEMENT

Nothing could top Belmont’s near-miss against Duke, but the other five games here left something to be desired in terms of drama.

QUOTABLE

“The real story was Mazzulla. That kid was fabulous. He was Jason Kidd out there. The star on that court was number 3, no question about that.”

— Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski on West Virginia guard Joe Mazzulla, who had 13 points and 11 rebounds

BY THE NUMBERS

15 Consecutive 3-pointers missed by Duke. The Blue Devils finished 5-for-22 from long distance.

PLAYER OF THE DAY

Joe Alexander, West Virginia: 22 points, 11 rebounds, three assists and three blocks — and he played all 40 minutes.
