SEEN AND HEARD AT PETCO PARK

SAN DIEGO - The Padres came within one dramatic, wild-card playoff game of making the postseason last fall, and they have been the class of the NL West for several years now, so their huge drop-off this year has stunned the locals.

San Diego entered last night’s game with the NL’s worst record at 19-33. The Padres have one of the least-productive lineups in the sport, and now they have lost both of their top two starting pitchers: Jake Peavy (sprained elbow) and Chris Young (broken nose).

The San Diego Union-Tribune ran a centerpiece package yesterday detailing all that’s wrong with this club, and folks around here seem already to have conceded defeat in 2008.
