Marine Lance Cpl. Nicholas C. Kirven of Richmond was killed in action in Afghanistan on May 8, 2005, Mother’s Day. It has been four years almost to the day since the last time we saw him, as he was departing for duty to Afghanistan. Missing Nich is an understatement. His mother, Beth, and I visit him weekly at Arlington National Cemetery. He continues to drive us and inspire us by his sacrifice. We look at the five added rows of headstones in front of him and grieve, not only for the fallen warriors, but for their wonderful, heroic families we have met. They continue to provide comfort and influence us tremendously. As the war continues and the causalities continue to climb, we pray for a peaceful end and the return of all our men and women serving this country and the sacrifices they continue to make.
