The planned community of Reston attracts residents for a variety of reasons. Some people move to the area to enjoy the myriad recreational amenities and stay fit on the miles of walking trails or in the swimming pools or on the tennis courts. Others are drawn by the urban vibe of Reston Town Center, where high-rise offices and condominiums cluster around restaurants, shops, a movie theater and a central space that morphs from an outdoor concert setting to an ice-skating rink as the seasons change.

What nearly every Reston resident appreciates is the sense of community among neighbors, who greet each other while walking dogs or pushing strollers, or gather to support each other’s causes. At Highland Park in the North Hills section of Reston, an enclave of 23 contemporary homes set on a hilltop, neighbors enjoy a sense of privacy, yet they can easily walk to a large shopping village or to the local swimming pool.

The home at 1322 Red Hawk Circle, now on the market for $999,999, is a prime example of a contemporary-style Reston home. Built by Gulick Group Inc. in 1999, this home has sleek angles, walls of windows (including the builder’s signature round window) and high ceilings. The home’s warmth is enhanced with hardwood floors throughout the main level and sunlight that pours in from windows in each room, including the laundry room and mudroom.

The owners customized their home with 9-foot ceilings on the lower level and a knee wall with columns to define the breakfast area, along with neutral yet distinctive paint that blends the interior of the home with the colors of the sky and trees outside.

The courtyard entry garden features pink and white cherry trees, evergreen trees and flowering shrubs that complement the flagstone walkway leading to the covered front porch. The flagstone porch features columns and wainscoting on the ceiling, which is used extensively to add a nice extra touch inside the home. Adjacent to the porch is the two-car garage, which was extended by 4 feet and has a 10 1/2-foot ceiling and storage space.

Inside, guests will want to linger in the two-story foyer, which features tall windows and glimpses of the backyard. Throughout the main and upper levels, the owners added oil-rubbed bronze doorknobs. The main level has 9-foot ceilings.

Just off the foyer, columns frame the entrance to the formal dining room, which has an antique light fixture, crown moldings and a triple window plus a side window facing the front garden. A swing door leads from the dining room into the butler’s pantry that links the room with the kitchen. The dining room could easily seat 10 to 12 guests for a formal dinner.

The butler’s pantry and kitchen both have Shaker-style antique white cabinetry that includes oversized specialty-storage drawers, and both rooms have granite countertops. Three handblown Italian glass pendants hang above the center island, which has additional open shelving, cabinets and drawers. The kitchen includes stainless steel appliances, a downdraft gas stove with an extra grill and a stainless steel hood with warming shelves.

Adjacent to the kitchen, the breakfast room has French doors leading to the patio and a knee wall with columns separating the space from the living room.

The central living room has another set of French doors leading to the patio, along with a gas fireplace that has a dramatic antique mantel. Just beyond the living room, the sunroom features another set of French doors to the patio on one wall, while the opposite wall is composed entirely of windows, including a graceful round window in the center. The owners added a delicate piece of filigree molding to the entrance to the sunroom, adding a romantic touch to the room.

The multilevel flagstone patio maximizes the space of the fully fenced backyard, which features flowering shrubs, holly trees, crape myrtles, pines, a red oak and a Southern magnolia tree. Just past the fence is a heavily wooded area that adds to the serenity and privacy of the yard. A vintage-style arbor separates the yard into two outdoor rooms, including a meditation area tucked into one corner.

Inside, the main level also includes a charming powder room with wainscoting and a colorful painted mirror. Nearby is the laundry room and mudroom, which the owners enhanced with more wainscoting, a window, a built-in bench, a closet and cabinets (in addition to the laundry machines).

Wood stairs lead from the foyer to the upper level, where hardwood floors continue into the hallway. Double doors open into the master suite, which is a sun-filled space wrapped in windows. The sitting room, which has a southeastern exposure, has two windows framing treetop views, and the master bedroom has three windows. The large walk-in closet has built-in cabinetry.

The luxurious master bath has a cathedral ceiling and a triple window above the soaking tub. Two separate vanities have Corian counters and the separate shower has a glass door. The bathroom has been enhanced with wainscoting and custom glass tile surrounding the soaking tub.

The front bedroom seems almost like a sunroom, with a wall of windows overlooking the front-garden cherry trees and an additional side window. This bedroom also has a walk-in closet.

The second bedroom has a double-door closet and views of the back garden, along with a private door to the hall bath. This bath has a solar tube to add natural light and includes a double-sink vanity.

The fourth bedroom, currently used as a home office, is privately located a few steps down from the hall. Extended (along with the garage below) by 4 feet, this room has sloping ceilings with recessed lighting and a large double window at one end. Another window is on the side wall. This room has three closets, including one with a built-in file cabinet, and a private full bath.

The finished lower level has 9-foot-high ceilings, allowing for French doors with a transom to be added to the recreation room. The recreation room has plenty of space for casual entertaining. There is additional space for a music room or game room. An open library nook has built-in bookcases on two walls.

The lower level also has a fifth bedroom with double-door closet and an adjacent full bath.

On the opposite side of the recreation room, double doors open into a finished exercise room with a lighted faux window and an adjacent hobby room with space for a work table and shelving. Along the hallway is an oversized storage closet with double doors, and an additional unfinished storage room has heavy-duty shelving.

This light-filled Reston home has flexible spaces to accommodate many different interests and offers plenty of space for entertaining casually or formally.
