Obama is a reactive manager when it comes to foreign policy. He proved that with his position on Georgia when Russia invaded. To keep terrorism from reaching U.S. shores you have to be proactive, keep them on the defensive. Like Clinton, he also a multilateralist. Clinton never committed U.S. forces in U.S. national interests (WTC bombing, Khobar Towers bombings, Embassy bombings or USS Cole bombings), strictly international interests (Kosovo Campaign). There are NATO forces in Afghanistan and Obama seems to lead by consensus, so therefore any actions in that area will be "joint and punitive" according to consensus which means we will stop the cross border intrusions and allow a Ho Chi Minh Trail scenario to develop and eventually attrition to force the U.S. and NATO out. Russia is also pressing against NATO and one cannot be sure how firm Obama stands behind this organization. This is what al-Zawahri perceives, a deterioration of the multilateral forces in Afghanistan.

"They must be defeated, and the Muslim world democratized and brought into modernity - kicking and screaming if necessary." Really? Good luck with that.

Let’s not forget where your expertise is and that is journalism, not foreign policy. That said, stick to what you know. Your interpretation of Islam is parallel to that of the “Red Scare”. If we pull out of Vietnam, the whole world will be overran by Communism. Come on, give me a break. Statistically your more likely to be kill by the hands of your fellow Americans or in a car wreck appose to that of an terrorist, let alone a Muslim. There is a saying from a pretty competent man when it comes to warfare and tactics and goes: “Keep your friends close, but keep your enemies closer”. Also, how does someone that represents the ideological 30% of this country write for such a prestigious paper? BTW, I’m not a liberal, but a moderate. An American in the middle, also a combat veteran of this war. So you can stop labeling Obama’s foreign policy as liberal, but instead, American.

Or: God shall prove you wrong and Barack Obama right, through people everywhere, who have true faith in God, and who love peace on earth to all those of good will. The powerful name of The Lord Jesus Christ interpreted is: The Boss (is) The Creator (is) The Savior (is) The Successful One. And this is true. Coronella Keiper, Rhode Island, U.S. of America.

I agree with your realistic thoughts and writtings. Actually I am really very worrying and I would never like to see what history has many times told us about. At first we need to understand what you are saying which are absolutely correct. Then we need to force our NATO and other Allies to join into this worldwide open war of terror which is unconventional but we all know the feeders which are Iran , Saudis, Syria, Hezbollah, Hammas, but mainly the extreme ideology of jihads. This is an ideological and religious war of the extremes who are getting the funds from the above countries and the insurgents from the radical islamists . They are everywhere. They are against our western civilization and don't want us live into their countries, but they want to live into our countries and spread jihad covered by "lwafull", radical islamists individuals and organizations. Well here is the big mistake that I hope that Mr. Obama will understand before it is too late. These extremes are so fanatically religious illusionairs that think that they have the mission from their God to change the world and turn it to Islam or kill. It is impossible to talk with them, even if they are much scared and stop for a while they will come back later more armed organized and ready to complete their mission. The answer is to educate them, not to permit them teach their jihadist ideologies into our country and Alliances, and stop Iran from getting new clear. If we try to change fast our succeeding tactics of resurge as the Genious General Pitreus has successfuly applied, if we don't listen to his advice and do otherwise then we will lose what after so many years have succeeded in a very high price. We need to make sure that Iraq is safe and may defend itself from Al Quida, other proxy army and Iran. We need to drastically fight with strategic planning all feeders and stop any radical hidden teachings. If we back up now then 9/11 will look like potatoes in front of what we are going to experience. So we need to make our military even stronger, our weappons even more drastic, our homeland security even more effective. We need to paralyze any radical islamist organization inside. We need to start the bible study and the prayer again in the schools for our main religion and not do the opposite to permit this only to the muslims!!! Go back to the eternal values of our christian spirituality , protect the family, and the morality in order to get also grace and wisdom from our Creator to defeat this most ever greatest danger of islamic/jihads.

Like all right-wing numbskulls, you are functionally unable to listen, but would rather go around screaming at the top of your lungs. This is a DIRECT QUOTE from Barack Obama's speech on the night he was Elected President by a majority AND plurality of the American people: "...To those who would tear this world down, WE WILL DEFEAT YOU." That includes, you, Kuhner.

There is delusion here alright , but it is not Obama's. You don't what liberal is. You don't know what fascism is. You don't know what the essential reality of our time is. Are you really paid to so completely mis-inform your readers? Our invasion of Iraq is seen by all the world as a war crime. there can be no victorious war crime. It has never been the case that talking to other nations automatically makes them stronger against our interests. I wouldn't be surprised to see you confidently claim that if only we had tried a little harder, tried a little longer we would have defeated the Viet Cong. The stupid, it burns.

My suggestion is that if US consevatives want to prevail, they must learn to think like Bolsheviks. The first rule of Bolshevism is to learn to distinguish the main enemy from lesser enemies and join with the lesser enemies to defeat the main enemy. This is claasic Maoism. It is also common sense. For this reason, I suggest that Conservatives drop the term Islamic Fascism. To use the term is to suggest that all Islamists or even all Muslims are fascists. This definition is wrong because it plays into the hands of the anti-US Muslims. Moreover, this term gets in the way of a US mobilization against the pro-US forces in the Muslim world. Moreover, the term Islamic Fascism draws attention away from the true US enemy, which is Iran. With Iran poperly identified as the main enemy, the US should be able to rally the world's Sunnis against Iran, especially the Arabs, and especially the Islamists, including elements of Saddam Hussen's Baathist Party, the Syrian Baathist Party, and even elements of al-Qaeda. The good news is that these Sunni extremists, some of which are communists and some of which are Islamists, are willing to kill Iranians. Muqtada al-Sadr's Mahdi Army, who are all Islamists, has killed hundreds of Iranian agents in Iraq. And how many Iranian agents has the US killed in Iraq? Not one. Zero. Zip. So, do not disparage the Muslims or the Islamists. They are good people who are trying to do the right thing. Here is a second suggestion. Why not refer to Iranians as the main enemy, or even better Iranian Nazis, which separates the definition of main enemy altogether from theology. -- Koba
