BOWLING GREEN, KY. (AP) - Steffphon Pettigrew and Sergio Kerusch each scored 20 points to lead Western Kentucky to a 79-70 win against Southern Illinois on Wednesday night.

The Hilltoppers (2-2) earned their first victory of the season over a Division I opponent, and Kerusch added five rebounds to go with his career high scoring output. Pettigrew grabbed a team-high seven rebounds.

The game began with both teams playing sloppy, combining to go 9-for-25 from the field in the first nine minutes. Western Kentucky turned things around and led Southern Illinois (2-3) 40-32 at halftime.

The Hilltoppers led the entire second half, leading by 17 at one point during the period. The Salukis got the lead down to as little as five before late free throws sealed the victory for Western Kentucky.

Ryan Hare led the Salukis with 16 points.
