A contemporary, arts-and-crafts-style home in Damascus has the feel of a year-round country retreat. Nestled on a hill, the home intermingles with nature as tall trees and lush landscaping surround the three-bedroom, three-bathroom home.

With Germantown as its neighbor, Damascus is at the intersection of two major roads in Montgomery County: Route 27 and Damascus-Laytonsville Road.

The house at 11200 Kingstead Road was built in 1988. Within the past several years, the owners have heavily invested in the home’s exterior and landscaping to create a lovely parklike setting that’s ideal for entertaining and is especially attractive at night.

Dramatic outdoor lighting and terraced landscaping, which includes a stone walkway and a custom-designed bi-level ipe deck with stone walls, are among the highlights.

Currently on the market for $639,500, the home features a circular driveway and stone and siding on the exterior. In addition to the oversized two-car garage, there is a paved parking pad.

The covered double-door entrance opens into the foyer, which boasts a mirrored closet door and a large picture window. The foyer is just one of many spaces in the home where guests are treated to calming nature views through the window.

The floors on the entire main level are multicolored ceramic tiles that resemble slate. Many of the rooms are painted in colors that complement the earth-tone floors and give the home an outdoorsy feel.

To the right of the foyer sits a spacious, open living room that can serve as either a formal or casual space for different types of gatherings. This well-planned room has a two-story cathedral ceiling with a second-floor overlook, two 9-foot-high windows (each with a Palladian-style window above) and a white Quadra-Fire pellet stove for cool winter days.

This house uses its space wisely. The wood staircase that separates the living room from the foyer has a built-in bookcase underneath the stairs.

The living room flows directly into a comfortably sized dining room with recessed lights. During the daytime, however, there is plenty of natural lighting from a long row of angled skylights on the back wall. Textured walls in the dining room (and other rooms throughout the house) provide a unique look.

Several steps away is the kitchen, where a counter separates the kitchen from the dining room. The counter provides a casual place to have a bite to eat, as it has room for six stools.

White ceramic tiles cover the large countertop that wraps around the entire area of the kitchen. There are several new appliances, including a stainless steel Bosch dishwasher and an under-cabinet CD player/radio. In addition to ample cabinet space with pullouts and lazy Susan corner cabinets, there’s a walk-in pantry.

Immediately to the left of the foyer, this floor plan features a large bonus area that has its own outdoor entrance. This bonus room would work great as a hobby room or recreation space. Across from the bonus area are French doors that open to reveal a 16-by-10-foot office or den with skylights, crown molding and access to utility closets.

The walk upstairs to the second floor is a scenic one with open views of the main living areas below and natural greenery outside the two-story windows.

At the top of the stairs, a family room loft is an unexpected surprise. This 22-by-11-foot space comes with Pergo floors, a cathedral ceiling with exposed beams, four skylights, a bright window with wood blinds and a small built-in bookcase.

Sliding glass doors open onto the backyard deck and patio retreat. There’s more to see before reaching the three carpeted bedrooms. Another multifunctional area adjacent to the family loft has tiled floors and a door with access to the terraced backyard.

This space includes a built-in cabinet with a countertop, making it a great area to prepare the morning coffee without having to go downstairs. The owners have also added a small table and two chairs for breakfast conversations or late-night snacks.

Privately situated away from the second and third bedrooms, the master suite is nicely appointed with a vaulted ceiling, walk-in closet and a bank of four sunny windows. This bedroom has tiled double vanities that are in the sleeping quarters just outside of the actual bathroom. The full bath includes a combination tub and shower with a glass door.

Around the corner and down a short hall are two more bedrooms in a wing by themselves. One of the bedrooms comes with its own private full bathroom. These rooms are adjacent to an expansive, light-filled open area that has a unique octagon-shaped skylight.

The backyard is a treasure, and the owners have fenced in a portion of the three-quarter-acre lot. A short, stone decorative wall surrounds the deck, making it an official entertaining area.

Home seekers looking for something out of the ordinary in serene surroundings will enjoy all that this amazing home has to offer.
