Racism did not become an issue until someone in the media did a poll on the Bradley effect. They directed it as if most of the white middle class Americans were closet racists. It was a strategy of shaming them into voting their social conscience. In reality, most of the questions with regard to Obama were directed at his lack of experience, tax, environmental, energy and social policies. The trend toward socialism and a dependence on the government was the 800 pound gorilla. Diversity is required for change. The only issue is that once change restabilizes, has it added to the perfection of union or has the perfection been degraded by a media that directs discourse instead of framing it. The media bias has been the most blantant form or political racism.
I seem to remember Mormanism as a reason to disqualify Rommney. How about all of the media portraying Sarah as a wild eyed right wing CHRISTIAN. The fact is,Obama is a Muslim according to the Muslim faith by virtue of his father being one. He practices the Christian faith (sort of) but to Muslim countries he is Muslim.
The real racism in the election was 90% of blacks voting against the White guy.
"May the most qualified win", is my motto. I think it's shared by most of us. Unfortunately, in this case, it didn't happen due to media assault on the better qualified opponent, the blatant ballot-stuffing efforts of ACORN and unprecedented campaign spending funded in great part by unidentified and possibly illegal sources.
The president-elect has a monumental task ahead. First to explain away the promises he already knew were unsupportable and second, to protect this nation against assault on its sovereignty from both external AND internal forces. As to the latter, I strongly suspect that he may be their puppet. Time will tell.
Good article. Such OpEds help raise the consciousness of Americans. It is the responsibility of all good people to fight against racism and religious intolerance. Discussions like this will help people to think about their attitudes.
However, racism is alive and well in America. Thanks to the rhetoric of many so called Christian, Jewish, and Mormon religious leaders warning that Muslims are determined to destroy the American way of life. Right wing media stars like Hannity and Limbaugh stir the hate soup, as well as politicians like Sarah Palin.
The American way of life was built on slavery, segregation, hatred, lynchings, as well as the extermination or subjugation of the aboriginal population. The State of Israel was established to subjugate the Palestinians as well.
The US War Machine is killing Muslims frequently in Iraq, Afghanistan, Somalia, and Pakistan. In response to the alleged 9-11 events, our military has seen to the deaths of over a million Muslims, millions more injured or traumatized for life, and millions homeless refugees.
The Bush Administration along with Israel continue to demonize the Iranian people now too. They have worked hard to justify anything up to and including a nuclear attack on Iran.
So, will Barack Obama be successful to bring world peace? Will he be able to survive the right wing hate machine which calls for his death? I hope so.
Will the world be able to overcome the institutionalized racism or religious intolerance expressed through militarism and violence? Let's hope so.
