The West is appeasing the Iranian Regime for the past 25 years. Mr. Jack Straw from UK, Mr. Chirac from France and State Departement Mr. Richard Armitage and his supporters here in US like Mr. Gary Sick, Congressman Bob Ney and Senator Jospeh Biden. What is the result of all these compromises, negotiation and appeasement? It is some crazy guy like Ahmadinejad. This is doing the same thing that happen in WWII with Mr. Chamberlin and how he reacted toward Hitler. Sometimes worst that Hitler and dictator like him are people who appease dictator and provide some sort of reason for their crime or their own inaction. Problem in today's world for Islamic Fundamentlism and Terrorist like Ahmadinejad. Terrorim is coming from Iranian goverment we see that in Iraq every day. All I can say is shame, shame and shame on the appeasment policy. Unless we have a stronge policy against Islamic Fundamentalism and terrorist like Ahmadinejad, we will have all these problem. Regime change is the only solution. No War and No Appeasment, the 3rd option of regime change by Iranian People and their democratic representatives.

AS Mr. Zumwalt mentioned in his article, appeasing the Mullahs is a fruitless policy with grave and catastrophic consequences. The United Sates has to make a strategic decision to shape up its policy in the Middle East. The best policy is to listen to the people and their democratic movements and walk away from supporting the suppressing regimes in the region. The United States should be listening to the people and not with their non-elected governments. If Islamist fundamentalism is the key enemy for the peace and stability in the region, the US should seek out for alliance with the Muslims who believe and cherish a democratic and pragmatic view of Islam. The PMOI in this frame is an excellent example. They have been fighting against the Mullahs, the main sponsor of Islamist terrorism around the globe, for the past thirty years. They believe in a secular and parliamentarian government. Women have a major role in the PMOI and the National Council of Resistance, an umbrella opposition group that POMI is a member of. The president-elect of the council is a woman, a Metallurgical Engineer. The ideology of PMOI is highly attracted by the people of Iraq and vast majority of Muslim intellectuals in the Middle East. The PMOI and the National Council of Resistance are key elements in fighting against the Mullahs in Iran. The best way for the US to disrupt the Mullah’s power is by delisting the group from the FTO.

Wonderful article by Mr. Zumwalt. His analysis is sound and the urgency is clear. US policymakers should really take note and take the advice of such revered citizens.

Thank you Mr. Zumwalt.West has underestimated the danger of fundamentalist so far, that is why people of the region had to suffer so much ,Also West had to pay such a high price for dealing with distraction created by mullah’s. Now it is time to be serious and take action against mullah’s in Iran, The Best way to do this, is recognizing Iranian’s right to change their fascist government ,and at the same time West should have good relations with the popular Iranian main opposition PMOI/MEK. Also I want to express my respect to Iranians that are in front of UN (NY)to show their support for people of Ashraf city in Iraq.

Thank you MR. Zumwalt for your detailed and precise assessment article. I hope the press will write more about how, as you have mentioned, "MEK has repeatedly shown it wishes to strengthen democracy in Iraq and counter Iranian influence." You are also absolutely correct that Ahmadinejad "salivates over the opportunity to participate in an MEK liquidation sale." Americans, with any political affiliation must realize that any harm done to the MEK in camp Ashraf is a gain for Ahmadinejad. Protecting the MEK will show Iranians and Iraqi's alike that the West is truly seeking democracy in the Middle East. US Congress, along with UN General Secretary must step in and ensure that there is no "liquidation sale" at the cost of Iranian people and a gain for the ayatollahs.

I would like to thank Mr.Zumwalt for his his opinion regarding how to deal with Iran and Iranian govenment's democratic opposition (MEK). Today it is very clear that fundamentalist rulers in Iran are the major threat to the world peace and security by pursuing atomic bomb and supporting terrorism all over the globe, especially in Iraq and Lebanon. The major mistake made by the U.S. regarding Iran was to place Iran’s main opposition group MEK on U.S. the list of foreign terrorist organization (FTO). Placing MEK on the list was a wrong political decision that gave mullahs in Iran the OK to suppress Iranian opposition even more. MEK believes in a tolerant and democratic Islam. They believe in a secular republic in which no religion will get special treatment. … So, what should be done? Option 1: Appeasement or so-called dialogue with Iran. Appeasing a religious dictatorship in Iran resulted in Ahmadinejad’s presidency and failed miserably, and gives them time to build a nuclear weapon. Option 2: Attacking Iran. Foreign war is not a viable option and is very costly in human lives, and we have the Iraq experience. Option 3: Support democratic change by Iranian people and their organized resistance. The third option is most viable and least costly, and Iranian people have faith in it. Removing the MEK from the FTO list is a perquisite to change in Iran, Also United States has the obligation by International laws to protect MEK members in Ashraf city since they are recognized protected persons under 4th Geneva convention.

I agree with you. People in Ashraf city are huge asset for Iranian people, Also Must be supported by anybody who feels fundamentalist are great threat to the security of free world .Residence of Ashraf city are real believers of peace and freedom and they should be protected as international laws indicates. Thank you

Excellent piece! For too many years the Iranian regime and its apologists in the West have pursued a campaign comprised of lies, half truths, and suppression with regard to the MEK. The reality is that they are a progressive Muslim organization dedicated to ideals that include equality, free will, and liberty in a region that is under siege by extremists. We must support the MEK in their struggle against the spread of Iranian sponsored extremism.

Truly and excellent article; I hope that Washington will open its ears and listen to such analysis' before it's too late. We can't let history repeat itself. WWII proved once in for all that policy of appeasement in face of brutal dictatorships will never succeed and will end in a humanitarian disaster unimaginable for humanity. I hope we take action before it's too late. Thank you very much MR. Zumwalt

Great Artical; Thanks so much to James Zumwalt for such detailed and informative article, American administration has tried for last 30 years to get along with Iranian regime as Robert Gets has said last week but American administration has not been able to find a person in Iranian regime to be trusted and to able to have a dialog with, so it is time for westeran countires to stop appeasement policy toward Iranin regime and support the only alternative and hope of Iranians. MEK has very strong supporters in Iran as well as outside of Iran and they are a very modern, democratic group who promot free will and liberty, respect for other faiths and believe in having respected relationship with every country. MEK is the only hope of the world to get ride of dictators of iran and establish peace in region. Thanks again to the author of the article

Great article. I think both presidential candidates should focus on Iran issue specially nuclear Iran in the near future. I believe in the Iranian People's desire for regime change. They deserve to live in a free, secular and democratic Iran. The only viable solution is to support Iranian people and their organized resistance led by Mrs. Maryam Rajavi.

Excellent article, people in Asraf are huge assest for Iran and with their great experinces will stop Iranian regime. MEK is able to bring freedom to Iran and that will be the main step to start bringing peace to all that area, this is the best alternative (by the people) for the Middle East.
