Take a look at capital gains tax rollbacks. It was sold to us as a way to promote trickle-down economics, so the rich guy could buy a new yacht and employ a bunch of out-of-work ship-builders. But have we been dazzled by the creative energy of those who enjoy the benefits of no taxes on their capital gains? No, not really.
And what percentage of the population will really benefit from a zero percent capital gains tax? 5%? 2%?
I know I won't, and I fall pretty nicely into the upper middle class demographic.
Look at the golden parachutes and tell me that it doesn't spark a little outrage in your own heart? Or does it only kindle a flame of envy? Do you wish that you, too, could be overcompensated for your work? Is that the new American Dream?
Against the backdrop of the worst economy since the Great Depression, and with the electorate polarized as never before, Mr. McCain cannot hope to win by tilting primarily towards conservative hot-button issues. This election is likely to be decided by relatively moderate and independent voters, and their top three concerns are, in descending order: (1) The Economy, (2) The Economy, and (3) The Economy.
