It is heartening to see that finally Amtrak is showing more profitability. Far from being a great cost to the government, this is probably the most cost effective system that was ever devised for the transportation of goods and passengers. Much more needs to be done. A commitment to upgrade the rail network to permit the use of faster trains is needed. There is plenty of money available to do this if we recognize the cost of maintaining a overfed highway system is counterproductive. In twenty years we may find a rail system that begins to be as good as that of most European countries. It will take at least twenty years to do this.
