Governor Gilmore ran up the largest deficit in Virginia's history and passed a debt ridden government onto Governor Warner. Governor Warner was able to cross the aisle and straighten out the financial mess he inherited from Gilmore. We don't want to give Gilmore another chance to screw things up again in the Senate. Vote Warner !
Virginia has a bad reputation for stupid taxes. Despite being stationed out of state due to military service, Campbell County's tax people were especially scrupulous in sending me a bill for the stupid car tax on top of having to pay for tag fees. After returning home from deployment overseas after a year, the local cop pulled me over for an out of date tax stamp on my first drive out of my parent's driveway. If only these people were as dedicated to stopping narcotics and vice...
Gilmore did the right thing in getting rid of the car tax. Virginia's govt services and educational system are not that much better than other places that I've been stationed despite their confiscatory taxes. Maybe Virginia is being more Northeastern and Yankee every day, however, in a misguidedly renewed love of liberal tax and spend politicians.
Your endorsement of Gilmore does not surprize me. This guy is a loser sort of like Bush, he has failed at most things.Gilmore served one year as chairman of the Republican National Committee, leaving after what was widely described as a clash of egos between him and Karl Rove, one of President Bush's top advisers.
Just another conservative loser.
I've lived in Virginia for 45 years. Every Virginia Governor in the last 20 years has faced a budget deficit. Warner is the only one to balance the budget by raising taxes. Gilmore, Warners predecessor, cut the car tax as promised during his gubernatorial campaign and delivered a balanced budget (as required under the Virginia Constitution) along with a $1 billion surplus when he left office. During the gubernatorial race against Mark Early, Warner pledged to fully implement the car tax cut and to NOT raise taxes. He lied on both accounts. Warner is a typical tax and spend liberal and certainly did lie about the deficit as stated in the editorial. He is not an honorable man of his word. Instead, Warner is just another carpetbagger politician like Tim Kaine who would have also raised taxes if not stopped by the Republicans in the House of Delegates.
