The difference between "right-wing" and "left-wing" is not between economic libertarianism and government intervention in the economy. It is between who is to be the beneficiary of tax-payer largess.
Under the Republicans, socialism goes to rebate the taxes of the rich (i.e. In the eyes of average Americans, people earning more that $200K), to relieve the bank shareholders and financial dealers of the consequences of their greed and stupidity, and to fund zillion-dollar wars of choice.
Under the Democrats, some of our tax-dollars might just go to free hard-working Americans from the fear of improverishment and worse through ill-health.
(Incidentally, one of the telling moments in this campaign was the multi-millionaire far-right commentator, Bill O'Reilly, making it clear that he didn't consider people earning $250K per annum "well-off"! This is the guy who would tell you that only the Republicans understand ordinary Americans!!!)
