Yep and it has too asymmetrical weapons to reinforce it; economics and energy.
The West won the cold war by bankrupting the Soviet Union.
That won't happen to Russia, with it's gas and oil wealth.
Without Western military power, and more important -- the will to use it -- Russia can take whatever it wants on its borders.
Does NATO have the will to stop Russia from taking Ossetia? Obviously not. Will the West have the will to stop Russia from taking Georgia?
I don't think so. And I'll bet the Russians don't either. Militarily, Russians know they can take Georgia and NATO will whine and do nothing.
Right now, Russians are pondering if taking Georgia is worth the trouble, financially and in terms of prestige and diplomacy.
Militarily, it would be theirs.
The cold war returns, but with a stronger Russia.
Russia's military budget to grow to more than 41 billion this year, eh? And ours: projected at 481 billion! Do you take us for fools?
