Excuse me but where in this article is the COBALT XFE mentioned? The Cobalt XFE is rated at 37 mpg as of 2009, beating out all other competition in its class (Corolla, Civic, Mazda 3). It is only available with a manual transmission, as an automatic would not be able to reach 37 mpg. Chevy has truly achieved an engineering feat to create a vehicle that has a larger engine than its competitors (2.2 L as opposed to 1.8 L for Corolla & Civic, and 2 L for Mazda 3) and yet still gets better fuel economy. Chevy is so proud of the XFE that they are keeping their lips sealed as to what tweaks they have done to the XFE. It has low-rolling-resistance tires, and undoubtedly a few engine enhancements, but that is about all that has been released to the public. I just wanted to give credit where credit is due.
According to the EPA 2009 fuel economy guide, the 22/30 mpg rating is for the 260 HP Cobalt SS. The standard Cobalt with a manual trans is the XFE, which is rated at 25/37 mpg -- numbers that much more strongly support your headline, not to mentionn trumping the competition.
