From the LA Times: "... (in 2003) McCain told MSNBC that it is "possible, if not probable, that internal opposition forces can prevail over time." Asked if it wouldn't require 100,000 U.S. soldiers as occupation troops, McCain demurred. "Oh, no," he said. "I don't think so at all."
Then from the editorial above: "By early 2006, Mr. Bush hoped to withdraw troops while Mr. McCain, exasperated, repeated: 'You know, I've ALWAYS said that we needed more troops over there. I have said that for years.' It would seem Sen. McCain, like those in the current administration, would prefer to rewrite history to his political advantage. To give him credit for "the surge" would be akin to giving water credit for freezing.
Wonderful the surge worked. Can we leave now? Anyone else here tired of paying for this war? Oh yeah. By the way what did we get out it? I still have no answer to that.
