A very good article. I live in Canada but my first thirteen years were spent in England. I was read to by my parents, but we were read to by our teachers. One of them read Dr Doolitle to us, another read Alan Quartermane. This usual happened the last period of the day. But this also happened in Sunday School. The BBC had a 15 minute program called "Listen With Mother" for pre=schoolers. I can still remember the introduction: "Are you sitting comfortably? Then I'll begin."
Perhaps PBS could revive this?
