SEEN AND HEARD AT NATIONALS PARK

If the Mets hang on to win the NL East, they at least ought to give some thanks to the Nationals for helping make it possible. In New York’s starting lineup Monday night: Brian Schneider and Ryan Church. Closing out games: Luis Ayala. Coming off the bench: Marlon Anderson. Remember those guys? Now, the case certainly can be made that the Nationals are better off without all four of them. Lastings Milledge and Jesus Flores are better long-term answers than Church and Schneider, and Ayala was horrible this year and wanted out. But it would be pretty interesting to see those guys playing in the postseason spotlight next month, knowing they wouldn’t be there without the Nationals’ help.
