If Iran truly has economic, social and political problems, it is that much more dangerous. Regimes in the past have faced similar domestic crisis. The solution was to blame their problems on outsiders, lashing out at those it blames for its situation with the effect of uniting the populace behind the regime.
We have all seen the videos of demonstrations calling for "Death to America," and "Death to Israel." While they may not be as numerous as in the past, they are still occuring and it would not take much for the frenzied demonstrations of the late '70s to ramp up. Diplomacy can only do so much.
Problems occurr when a simplistic approach is advised! We are talking with Iran, just NOT at the highest (Presidential) levels! To spout the nonsense we are not is ridiculous!
To insure we're all on the same page, there must be inclusion with our allies, and foes, so everyone knows what is going on, AND can have input! After all, it will affect them also!
So, in a nutshell, talk and negotiate with friends AND foes alike! Keeping one informed and on board, and the other involved!
We failed in Afganistan, the Sudan, and the other places we've attempted to aid, because we do NOT follow through after the initial trouble is resolved.
We fail to see follow on problems and help to end them in a timely manner!
