At least he is trying to appear like he is doing something.

Steps up? Maverick style? Are you doing drugs? McCain just surrendered the election, as he apparently thinks democracy works fine without free elections during which candidates are tested, in public by the people. Why is he scared to debate Obama? His internals must have him being blown out of the water to pull joke like this. The gas tax gimmick? Failed. The Palin gimmick? Failed. This gimmick? Doomed to failure. Washington Times writers sound just like the people who call me during dinner to sell me diet pills: trying to make even the biggest sham sound credible.

Maverick? He's forfeiting the debate to Obama. He can't do two things at once? What kind of president will he make? This is nothing but a blatant political move on his part and it's weak.

This smacks of desperation.

Maverick style? You call this maverick style? This is retreat and defeat. He is leaving his republican friends behind as he hides behind the "crisis" to go back to DC to lick his wounds. He's pathetic for such a great hero. It is really sad to see him flounder when he used to be the real thing.

Both of these men need to be right in the mix. Face to face with all of the decision makers. They need to make a stand and stand for something. No hiding behind an election. They need to protect the interest of the American people - you and I. They can't do that checking in every day over the phone. How important is the debate? Zero compared to the need to solve this problem and porotect our interests. There will be plenty of time for debates.

Maverick style? How about "Transparent Ploy"? Or "Deperate Gambit"? Of a panicked candidate who's slipping badly in the polls and has been on the wrong side of the issue since he first emitted an opinion. Like Sarah Palin's selection - and in your heart, you know she's wrong - another Hail Mary pass. Expect to see more.

But I thought the fundamentals of our economy were strong? John McCain told me that a week ago. Yet now he wants to reschedule his debate for the night of his running mate's scheduled debate -- even as she seemed to be having a hard time putting a sentence together in the face of Katie Couric's not-so-blistering questions -- because it's suddenly become clear to him that things are just that dire. There's no way that this does not reek of presidential politics. McCain asks us to believe that it's about something else, anything else, because presidential politics are one thing that this presidential candidate simply cannot afford right now. Do you believe him? History will decide whether Obama's association with Jeremiah Wright or McCain's association with Phil Gramm have been more detrimental to the affairs of the average American citizen, in our collective estimation. I'm fairly certain that the correct answer is "the latter," but I'm only one of millions.

Hahahaha....all the comments by Libs are so cynical, it's hilarious. It must be a real joy waking up in the morning with the sour expression on your face!! Fellas, if Obama is the world's greatest mind, based on Hegel's Universal Spirit, who knows so much he doesn't need a lick of experience to qualify as Leader of the Free World...HOW does he end up getting outfoxed at each juncture? John McCain might lose this thing, but his canny gamesmanship is causing all of the Conservatives to have a wonderful ride. With the way things have broken for McCain he should be 30 points behind. But the unparalleled community organizing genius is keeping it close, somehow! And how about that Sarah Palin, friends?!! Bill Clinton praising Palin & family on national TV was worth its weight in gold. And there goes Barry Einstein Obama with Hillary scowling at him each time he walks past with that inanely smug look on his self-satisfied visage... LMFAO!!!

First and foremost McCain and Obama are elected US Senators. That is their job. Whats happening is similar to one of us being on vacation and something really bad happens at work. One employee (McCain) voluntarily returns to work because he recognizes that he is needed there. And the other one (Obama) continues fishing because, well, other people can handle it and besides, in his own words, "call me if you need me". He can't even vote 'present' this time.

I agree with Maxx: McCain is taking part in solving a financial tsunami and his leadership, commitment to his job shows he clearly doesn't care about losing an election, he rather save the economy. This is a real leader. Obama is all smooth talk, a real hollywood character, focused on a campaign while the country's economy tanks....how "presidential" is that?

Query: Has Obama, World's Greatest Orator, said a SINGLE memorable thing yet, in this campaign? The way he hems & haws when he speaks, you'd think he was a bellows in a previous life. But the Great Laff Riot of the day was Chief Joe "Sitting Bull" Biden claiming that a real leader is INFORMED & then lecturing on how FDR took to the TV airwaves to talk back to the Depression & give the people hope. Sacred Guano, does this guy come with an instruction manual? Could you imagine him doing negotiations with Vladie Putin? Putin would finally get so irritated he'd slap li'l Joe till he cried "mama!!" Talk about the Land of The Clueless & Doltish!!! But, YES, it's a ~new~ kind of politics! And if you believe THAT, I have a lock of Thomas Jefferson's hair I'd like to sell you...

Speaking to Katie Couric on September 23, in reference to the current turmoil on wall Street, Joe Biden said : "Part of what a leader does is to instill confidence, to demonstrate that he or she knows what they're talking about... And when the stock market crashed, Franklin Roosevelt got on television and didn't just talk about, you know, the princes of greed, he said, "Look, here's what happened..." How can ANYBODY vote for these two? Obama, who acts like more of an airhead than Tom Cruise, and just floats along on soundbites and smug expressions. And Biden, another know-it-all in search of a clue. God help us.

"Because nothing brings greater happiness in life than to serve a cause greater than yourself." - John McCain "All these functions of government were designed before the rise of the global economy, the information technology revolution and the end of the Cold War. We have to catch up to history, and we have to change the way we do business in Washington." - John McCain It's called integrity, the man believes in what he says and his actions correspond. With Senate bill S-190 which was taken down by Obama, Clinton and Dobbs, you might even say he had some foresight on the second quote above.
