THURSDAY´S BEST BET ON TV

No brainer. The Redskins open the NFL regular season at the New York Giants. 7 p.m., Chs. 4, 11

LOCAL POWER RANKINGS

JIM ZORN

Seven months after his hire, he makes his Redskins coaching debut with a tough assignment. He should take a nothing-to-lose attitude and go for it with aggressive play calling Thursday.

SHUN WHITE

In Navy’s win over Towson, he rushed for 348 yards … on 19 carries (with three touchdowns). At this rate, he will finish the regular season with 4,176 yards and the Heisman Trophy.

FRANK BEAMER

He makes the puzzling decision to redshirt Tyrod Taylor and then decides one game of Sean Glennon is enough and takes the shirt off Taylor.

JESUS FLORES

One of the few silver linings in this endless summer for the Nationals is they found their catcher of the present and future. Now if only Jim Bowden can get six or seven other positions figured out.

JON JANSEN

The disposed Redskins right tackle deserved better from his coach and absolutely his position coach. To learn of a likely demotion from the media is not right.

TWT FIVE “ PEOPLE JOHN MADDEN WILL PICK AS HIS FAVORITES DURING THURSDAY’S BROADCAST

1. Eli Manning - Madden usually picks one player a game to praise, and he will choose the Super Bowl XLII MVP, although numerous mentions of New York’s other QB (Brett Favre) are a given.

2. Tom Coughlin - Madden praised Coughlin for how he handled the Week 17 game against New England - playing his regulars. With no Coach Joe on the sidelines, Coach Tom is his choice.

3. London Fletcher - To try and even things up a little bit, Fletcher will be the Redskins’ pick to compliment since he’s the quarterback of the defense.

4. Gene Upshaw - One of Madden’s great players during his Oakland Raiders days of the 1970s. Upshaw’s funeral service was Tuesday, and Madden paying tribute to No. 63 is justified.

5. Colt Brennan - The Redskins’ No. 3 quarterback was No. 1 in Madden’s heart last week against Jacksonville. Like a lot of Washington fans, he has fallen in love with the gunslinger.
