Nothing is sacred, as evidenced by The Washington Times running a column attacking workers and their unions on Labor Day (“Unions: What works, what doesn’t,” Commentary, Monday). However, with respect to Ed Feulner’s desire for reform of our outdated labor laws, America’s workers couldn’t agree more. These changes require leveling the playing field and making it easier for workers to join unions.

The Employee Free Choice Act would amend our obsolete labor laws by giving employees, not their employers, the ability to choose how they seek union recognition. The federal legislation also would stiffen penalties against employers who violate the law. Contrary to misleading claims from anti-union organizations, a recent nationwide poll by the nonpartisan Drum Major Institute for Public Policy found that 68 percent of middle-class adults would have liked their member of Congress to vote for the bill. The American public understands that our economy is broken and that increased union membership would help rebuild our dwindling middle class.
