Yeah, when they build something other than a marketing tool. I rue the day when I must replace my 2003 VW TDI (diesel) Jetta Wagen that gets ~50 mpg on the highway and still maintains ~40 mpg under the worst possible driving conditions.
There is no car on the market today that I would willingly buy, including 'new' VWs.
I have owned both a Chysler Minivan and and a Ford Ranger in the past. Based on my less than happy experience I am sticking with my American made Toyotas. Fool me once.
I have done my part over the last few years. I have bought two Hondas (traded in the first on my current Pilot).
I didn't even need the mayor of Marysville to implore me to do so.
But as I look out my window at the parking lot, I can easily spot quite a few cars this mayor would like me to buy. They really stand out from the many Toyotas, Hondas, Nissans, BMWs etc.
They are the ones with the clear-coat and/or paint peeling off (one is a farily new looking Dodge Ram has a huge spot on the hood where the paint has peeled off). Many of the cars I see this problem on are US "Detroit" cars that are only a few years old.
What great visual advertising for Detroit.
One of my co-workers had a new Jeep this happened to after just a couple of years. I have to be fair and note that Jeep actually redid the finish - after he put a huge sign on the vehicle and parked it across from the dealership.
This doesn't happen to all Detroit cars. I'm guessing just the ones built on a Friday.
Really Mayor, save your breath. I would rather keep my Honda and use all the money I don't spend on service buying other American gadgets like the iPhone.
Other cars I owned - A civic I gave to my dad at 180,000 miles and a Corolla I sold at 192,000 miles. Neither even had a clutch go out or that infamous timing belt replaced. My brand new '92 Ford truck - bad off the lot (fuel pump sporadically turned off and on until at 5000 miles it quit working altogether). My brand new Dodge 2500 RAM had a bad oxygen sensor, again from the day I drove it off the lot (took until well after the warranty expired for Dodge to find that was the problem causing my occasional loss of power, backfiring and sputtering).
So no, from my experience, this American has probably saved a ton of money and a lot of headaches and frustration by not listening to this mayor.
I work hard for my money...I am not going to spend money on an American car just to bail out a overpaid, bloated union workforce. I will spend my money where I get the best value for the dollar...I have two Hyundai's in the garage...A 30 MPG Santa Fe for family travel and shopping and a 42mpg Accent to get me to and from work. The first was under 20k the second under 11k. Detroit can't come close...
Buying ANY car built here supports American workers.
Vote against the Employee Free Choice Act or these unions cretins will have even more opportunity to cripple our economy.
Spare me the talk of supporting America. These union thugs went on strike during a time when our nation is at war: Sikorsky, UAW, Boeing, American Axle. We can't count on unions to support America. Unions support themselves, period.
They don't care about America. If they did the concessions would be done and they'd be building cars instead of protesting.
We are going to lose the "loan" because these union thugs are looking after themselves and really not worried about the effect of defaulting on their "loan" may have on America.
I'll buy an American car when the UAW really supports America and/or builds a decent product.
