It is time to declare that publicly funded education is a failed 100-year old policy experiment.
Like every monopoly the costs far outweigh the benefits. In my district, at current rates it costs $170,000 to educate a child from k-12. A ridiculous amount that the public will never recoup as it would take 34 years of paying property tax at the current average rate to pay this back.
Clearly public education is a bad deal in terms of cost-benefit and it is in need of reform. Reforms include eliminating the monopoly for public schools and ensure those using the services directly benefit, or not, from fiscal discipline of each school by being responsible for paying the operating costs of the services which they use.
This is a great piece by some of our best conservative senators. Obama should consider this plan to generate greater levels of educational excellence, buy-in, and accountability at the state level.
