Our laws, not foreign laws

No one denies that our values often differ from those of other countries. This is true by definition - we are the freest nation on Earth, with the fairest and most just legal system any people has ever known.

The job of the Supreme Court is to protect that legacy, not to disrespect it by bowing to the laws and opinions of other nations.

Sen. Jeff Sessions, Alabama Republican, is the ranking member of the Senate Judiciary Committee. In advance of the confirmation hearing for Judge Sonia Sotomayor, Mr. Sessions is delivering a series of speeches on the Senate floor regarding the proper role of a federal judge in America and the case for judicial restraint. This column was adapted from the latest speech.
