MINEOLA, N.Y. (AP) - A former high school teacher in New York has been rearrested a day after being sentenced for having a long-running affair with a 16-year-old student.

Heather Kennedy was released on $15,000 bail after her arraignment Saturday on criminal contempt charges.

A Nassau County prosecutors’ spokesman says the new charges reflect letters Kennedy wrote the boy in August and September, while jailed on earlier charges stemming from their relationship. A court had ordered her to avoid contact with him.

A defense lawyer says Kennedy has since realized the romance isn’t viable.

After her earlier arrest, the former Wantagh (WAHN’-taw) High School math teacher pleaded guilty to rape and other offenses. She was sentenced Friday to the six months in jail she had served.
