A small plane has crashed in Gaithersburg.

Montgomery County fire department spokesman Pete Piriginer said the plane departed about 1:45 p.m. from nearby Montgomery County Airpark. The pilot ran into problems, Mr. Piringer said, and was attempting to return to the airport when the plane went down. Mr. Piringer did not know the nature of the problems.

He said the plane crashed on Mallory Place, between Snouffer School Road and Mountain Ash Way, near the entrance to a couple of neighborhoods.

He said the pilot escaped by parachute and was uninjured. No one else was aboard the plane, and no one on the ground was injured.

Mr. Piringer said a portion of Snouffer School Road has been closed to traffic while hazardous materials crews clean up a minor fuel spill.
