Israel Lopez scored on a penalty shot in the 62nd minute Tuesday night to lift host Mexican club Toluca to a 1-1 draw with D.C. United in the CONCACAF Champions League.
Chris Pontius scored for United in the fifth minute. The draw gave Toluca 13 points and first place in Group B.
D.C. United has 10 points and will have to wait for the result of Thursday’s match between Marathon of Honduras and Jabloteh of Trinidad and Tobago to know whether it will advance to the quarterfinals.
“We definitely wanted to come and get the result here so we didn’t have to count on somebody else,” United coach Tom Soehn said. “This is a tough environment to come in and play in. I thought our guys handled it well.”
Marathon has nine points. If it draws, D.C. United advances because United has a better goal differential in their two head-to-head matches. A Marathon victory would eliminate United.
