Question of the Day

Is it still considered bad form to talk politics during a social gathering?

Capitalism loves Moore

Michael Moore’s new film, “Capitalism: A Love Story,” debuted last weekend in the wake of scores of statements about the evils of capitalism. For example, Mr. Moore told the conservative news outlet CNS.com that “capitalism did nothing for me, starting with my first film.”

Not so fast, countered “Vladimir” at the Red State blog, saying “You’re wrong, Michael. Dead wrong. Capitalism has done plenty for you, sport,” and going on to list “The Top Ten Things That Capitalism Has Done for Michael Moore,” with the subtitle “Mmmmmm. Bacon.” Several of the 10 are fat jokes, and here are some of the others.

“5. Intellectual property rights are protected under capitalism. (It makes me shudder to refer to your, ahem, body of work as ‘intellectual property,’ but there you have it.)

“6. If you subtract out the rentals and royalties you’ve earned from theaters and distributors who are capitalists, you’d be living under a bridge somewhere.

“7. Your freedom to ambush corporate CEOs made you rich. You try that stunt with the new owners of GM, and you’ll have your kneecaps broken.

“8. Or worse, your next movie will be called ‘Jimmy Hoffa and Me.’

“10. Most of all, you should be thankful that capitalism has given you an affluent, liberal, self-loathing audience which eagerly laps up your tripe.”

Moore loves Obama

Conservative blogger Ann Althouse saw “Capitalism: A Love Story” over the weekend and noted, in a series of short reactions, that Michael Moore has an opinion about President Obama that, if it were to come from someone on the right, would make him seem to be a crank or, in the eyes of some on the left, a racist. It’s not the most politic thing to say about Mr. Obama.

“Amusingly, Barack Obama is presented — outright — as a socialist. We see a roomful of people exulting over the election-night announcement that Obama has won and, in context, we’re made to think that it’s the downtrodden people celebrating that socialism has arrived. I don’t think Obama really wants Michael Moore’s help,” she said.

Skyscraper loves PRC

Speaking of how capitalism treats socialists, the Empire State Building caused a row last week by turning itself red and yellow — the colors of the flag of the People’s Republic of China — to honor the 60th anniversary of Mao Zedong’s establishment of the communist regime.

“Tune in next week when the Empire State goes Red & Black to honor the Nazis,” said an outraged “Bookworm” at the Bookworm Room.

Michael Goldfarb of the Weekly Standard blog dryly reacted: “Hey, the Red Chinese only killed 50 or 60 million of their own people, why not celebrate that achievement with a special lighting scheme. The only question is what colors they use for Stalin’s birthday, since obviously they don’t want people confused as to which genocidal regime they’re paying tribute to on any particular night.”

In an update, Mr. Goldfarb was reminded by a reader that in the summer, Iranian pro-democracy activists asked to have the building turn its lights green — their cause’s chosen color. A Wall Street Journal report to which Mr. Goldfarb linked said the request was denied because, according to “those familiar with the building’s practice” the ownership “avoids taking sides in political disputes.”

Richard Burger of the Peking Duck blog defended the lighting, saying, “China has done bad things, and it’s done good things, like all countries. China has its fair share of atrocities, injustices and a considerable legacy of repression and injustice. But China is not Nazi Germany, they are not a nation of deranged Maoists, and they happen to be one of the linchpins in the global economy that keeps America afloat. They happen to be moving in the right direction, despite some infuriating steps backwards. We all know the story, we all know the bad stuff and the good stuff.”

Mr. Burger then warmed to his preferred subject — opposition to conservative “inbred stupidity.”

“So when I see Americans go insane over the Empire State Building turning red and yellow to mark the 60th anniversary of the PRC, I have to say it’s simply nuts. We recognize China, we trade with China, we work with China — our fates are tied together, perhaps inextricably. Seeing the outpouring of hate and paranoia from the right-wing blogs, while predictable. is a good reminder of the prejudices many in America bear toward our No. 1 trading partner, and of our ongoing inbred stupidity when it comes to scare words like ‘Red China.’”

Sign loves Obama (not)

A billboard along Interstate 70 near Blue Springs, Mo., drew national media attention last week for strongly implying that President Obama is a communist.

The red sign, nestled among a score of commercial and other messages, features a prominent hammer and sickle and reads, “How do you like your change now? Obama-nation. They are coming for you! The Taxpayer. 1st & 2nd amendments are in jeopardy. Live free or die.”

Conservative blogger Left Coast Rebel decided to have some fun with the item by listing reactions from hypothetical passers-by and adding others as readers suggested them. Highlight included:

“Which Wall Street corporate interest paid the $$$ to have this put up? (Michael Moore)

“Raaaaacism! (the entire media/Democrat industrial complex)

“What is that weird sign with the curvy thing? (public school student)

“That’s racist … but that’s not what I said. (Jimmy Carter)

“The sign should be red and yellow! (managers of the Empire State Building)

“Yeah, but Beyonce had one of the best videos of all time! (Kanye West)

All love ACORN

When it rains, it pours. The saying applies not just to water, but also apparently to “acorns.”

A further series of setbacks has befallen the liberal group since Andrew Breitbart’s blockbuster sting tape of the group aiding a supposed pimp and child-prostitution scam. In one of them, Jim Hoft of Gateway Pundit noted that the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now has been charged with hiring as vote canvassers people still serving prison time for, among other crimes, identity theft.

In a Fox News interview highlighted by Mr. Hoft, Nevada Secretary of State Ross Miller, a Democrat, “said that by executing a search warrant at ACORN headquarters in Nevada the authorities were able to substantiate charges and have a very solid case against ACORN. They believe they can prove that it’s not just a few bad apples; it went much higher up in the organization. Ross believes that ACORN and the regional director should be held accountable for the criminal activity that took place in the state.”
