A standout among DirecTV Inc.’s second-quarter results was the strong performance of its Latin American satellite TV business.

DirecTV CEO Michael White discussed other possible international markets that his company could enter, during a conference call with analysts on Thursday.

QUESTION: What other international markets would you consider entering?

RESPONSE: While we’re opportunistically continuing to be open to ideas in the emerging markets, our focus is Latin America.

If there was one takeaway from the work we did where we looked extensively at markets from China to India and Russia and the Middle East, (it’s that) ours is a highly-regulated industry and we don’t have that many regions of the world where you can own 100 percent of your business, where you have quality programming that consumers are willing to pay for, particularly sports.

I don’t see significant investments that we would be making at this time. I think our focus is on Latin America … and frankly, we continue to see strong growth potential, primarily because of the low penetration rates that you still see for pay TV.
