MIAMI (AP) - Reliever Randy Choate, who led the American League in appearances this year, has been rewarded for his hard work: He agreed Wednesday to a $2.5 million, two-year contract with the Florida Marlins.
Choate appeared in 85 games in 2010, the most in the AL since 2004 and the most by a left-hander in the AL since 1998. He went 4-3 with a 4.23 ERA for Tampa Bay and held left-handed hitters to a .202 average, fourth-best in the league.
Choate will receive $1 million in 2011 and $1.5 million in 2012. He can earn an additional $150,000 annually in performance bonuses, with $50,000 each for 60, 70 and 80 games.
His agreement was negotiated by agents Sam and Seth Levinson.
“Randy is experienced and proven against left-handed hitters,” Marlins president of baseball operations Larry Beinfest said. “Heading into spring training, our bullpen has a different, balanced look.”
The Marlins, eager to strengthen their left-handed relief, acquired lefty Mike Dunn last month.
Choate has also pitched for the Yankees and Diamondbacks. He has a career record of 10-10 with an ERA of 4.39 in 342 games.
