How did you get started in real estate? I was tired of working a job where I got the same standard-of-living increase every year no matter how hard I worked. My sister was in sales and suggested that I change careers. After months of discussing options with her, I realized real estate was the only sales job I could really get behind. I didn’t have to sell anyone something they didn’t want or need. I could sell homeownership - which I truly believe in.

How long have you been with the current company? Five years

Greatest accomplishment in the past 12 months: My greatest accomplishment this year was when I realized all my listings for 2009 sold in less than 30 days, at or above list price.

Area of specialty: The Northeast D.C.-Brookland area and first-time homebuyers

Most memorable house: I love houses that are most similar to my dream house. For me, however, it’s not the houses that are so memorable, it’s the people. I have had such wonderful clients, some of whom have become very close friends. For those whom I don’t see regularly, I have an annual summer party that many of my previous clients of all ages and walks of life attend. It’s wonderful to share my home with so many people who truly have become my real estate family.

Worst experience buying or selling a house: One of my most challenging experiences came at the beginning of the market downturn. I was approached by a seller who had attended several of my open houses in the neighborhood and had an investment property to sell. She had purchased a house with a longtime friend, who also was a real estate agent, for the purpose of renovating it and selling it for a profit. Over the course of their investment project, they had several major disagreements and essentially had become estranged. When they were ready to sell, they agreed to hire a neutral real estate agent to list the property - which ended up being me.

Unfortunately, they had overspent on the property renovation and became my first experience with a short sale - about a year before “short sale” became an everyday term. Each seller negotiated separately with the bank in regard to the shortage. It wasn’t until the day of closing that it became apparent that one of them had negotiated a better deal than the other, which infuriated the other.

The settlement came to a head with one seller chasing the other down a busy D.C. street, yelling profanities, while everyone else looked on stunned. I was able to convince each of them that putting the property back on the market was not going to change the situation and moving forward with the sale was in both of their best interests. After I moved them to separate rooms, they signed the paperwork. The buyer was thrilled with her new home, and the sellers went their separate ways.

Describe your personal dream house: My dream house is a completely restored Arts and Crafts bungalow in the District. It would have a sizable fenced yard with a cottage-style garden, an amazing porch in front and a large, screened-in deck in back. It would have hardwood floors, built-in bookcases, tons of original wood details, a fireplace, crystal doorknobs and stained-glass windows. The kitchen would be modern but in a 1920s style with gorgeous wood cabinetry, a tin ceiling, tile backsplash and a farm sink. There would be at least two baths, one with a claw-foot tub and the other with a large glass-tile shower. It would have a large finished walk-out basement that would be set up as a recreation room for entertaining.
