GOAL OF THE DAY

Andres Iniesta took a pass from Cesc Fabregas, who controlled the ball after a misplay by the Dutch defense, and sent an 8-yard shot off the far post and into the net with about seven minutes remaining in extra time, including injury time. The goal gave Spain its first World Cup, 1-0 over the Netherlands.

STARS OF THE DAY

Andres Iniesta, who scored Spain’s goal in the 1-0 victory over the Netherlands that gave it the World Cup, and captain Iker Casillas, who made several big saves, including twice on Arjen Robben when the Dutch forward broke free.

HISTORY

Spain won its first World Cup by beating the Netherlands 1-0. The Spaniards are the third team to hold the European Championship and World Cup titles at the same time, joining West Germany and France.

The Netherlands now has lost three finals and own the most World Cup victories without taking the title: 19.

This World Cup’s 31 games that were decided by one goal are the most in a single tournament. The next highest was 27 games in 2002.
