THE REQUIREMENTS: A new law requires companies to check whether their products contain minerals from rebel-controlled mines in Congo and surrounding countries.

LABELING: Products can be labeled as “conflict free” if their makers can prove they don’t contain minerals that directly or indirectly finance or benefit armed groups in those countries.

THE FEARS: Companies may simply avoid buying minerals from the region entirely _ even if they are conflict free _ harming the economy there.
