Senators mark Metro crash anniversary

- Associated Press - Monday, June 21, 2010

WASHINGTON (AP) — Maryland's two senators and Virginia Sen. Jim Webb are marking the one year anniversary of a deadly Metrorail crash by calling for passage of a bill establishing national safety standards for transit systems.

Sens. Barbara Mikulski and Ben Cardin are joining Webb at a news conference Monday to call on their colleagues to pass the legislation and affirm their commitment to reforming Metro.

The Senate Banking Committee is expected to markup its legislation on transit system safety standards next week.

The Metro crash killed nine people and injured 80 when a train slammed into another train stopped on the tracks.
