TURN IT UP: MetroPCS on Tuesday became the first U.S. phone company to turn on a network that uses LTE, a new wireless technology that promises faster data speeds.

THE COMPETITION: MetroPCS, the fifth-largest wireless carrier, beat the largest, Verizon Wireless, to the punch. It expects to turn on LTE before the end of the year.

WHAT HAPPENS IN VEGAS: MetroPCS took LTE live in Las Vegas but expects to add it to the rest of its coverage map in January.
