COLUMBUS, Ohio | Matt Hendricks scored three goals and starter Semyon Varlamov stopped all 20 shots he faced to help Washington — playing without star Alexander Ovechkin — beat the Columbus Blue Jackets 6-2 on Wednesday night in the Capitals’ preseason opener.
Tomas Fleischmann had two goals and an assist, Cody Eakin also scored, Alexander Semin had three assists and Marcus Johansson added two assists for the Capitals.
Rick Nash and Nikita Filatov scored for Columbus, which opened exhibition play Tuesday night with a 5-2 victory in Atlanta. Steve Mason allowed two goals on 13 shots in a period and a half of action.
