Blue Jays manager Gaston ejected for arguing

TORONTO (AP) - Blue Jays manager Cito Gaston was ejected from the penultimate home game of his managerial career Tuesday for arguing with plate umpire Mark Carlson.

Gaston first argued with Carlson after Brett Gardner was called safe on a close play at the plate in the fifth inning. Gardner appeared to get his foot across the plate before being tagged by catcher John Buck on Derek Jeter’s grounder to third.

Gaston argued again in the sixth after Carlson called Blue Jays DH J.P. Arencibia out for running outside the baseline on a grounder to first. The throw from Yankees left-hander CC Sabathia hit Arencibia, who was running on the inside of the line.

After arguing, Gaston had turned back to the dugout when he made one final comment, prompting Carlson to eject him, the third time this season he’s been tossed.

Gaston returned and renewed the argument with Carlson before crew chief Jeff Kellogg intervened, pointing Gaston back to the dugout.

The crowd of 18,193 stood and chanted “Cito! Cito!” as Gaston, who is set to retire at season’s end, walked off the field.

The Blue Jays will hold a farewell ceremony for Gaston before Wednesday’s game, their final home game of the season.
