WASHINGTON | With forecasts predicting that Washington could get several inches of rain over the next day from a passing tropical storm, Washington is handing out sandbags to residents.

The D.C. Department of Public Works is distributing up to five sandbags per household starting at 4 p.m. Wednesday at its New Jersey Avenue and K Street southeast site.

Residents will have to load the 40- to 50-pound bags into their vehicles, but officials say help is available if needed.
