Ex-major leaguer Everett arrested on assault charge

LUTZ, Fla. | Former major league outfielder Carl Everett was in a Tampa jail Tuesday on a charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon after putting a handgun to his wife’s head, according to police records.

Everett, 39, was arrested Monday night at his home in the Tampa suburb of Lutz. He also was charged with tampering with a witness and was being held in the Hillsborough County Jail.

According to the arrest affidavit, Linda Everett attempted to call 911 twice, using two different phones, but her husband managed to grab the phones and broke them both.

The arrest report says the couple has three children, but it wasn’t immediately known if the children were present during the fight or arrest. Everett played for eight major league teams spanning 14 seasons.


American Isner swept out in first round of Serbia Open

BELGRADE, Serbia | John Isner of the United States lost to Ricardo Mello 6-4, 7-6 (7-4) Tuesday in the first round of the Serbia Open. The big-serving Isner had 18 aces,. but Mello converted the only break point of the first set to take control of the match. Also, Somdev Devvarman, a two-time NCAA singles champion at Virginia, rallied to beat Mikhail Kukushkin 1-6, 6-4, 6-2.
