D.C.’s Pontius summoned to U.S. national team
Coach Juergen Klinsmann added Pontius and defender Jonathan Spector as replacements for the injured Heath Pearce and Zach Loyd. It’s the second call-up for Pontius, who participated in a January 2010 training camp.
Pontius, 24, is enjoying a standout campaign in his third season with United. After missing much of the 2010 season to injury, he leads the club in games and minutes played and is second on the team with seven goals.
The California native will be joined in camp by United goalkeeper Bill Hamid, who was named to the original 24-player roster. Pontius and Hamid will be looking to make their first national team appearances.

Woods wants to justify selection to Presidents Cup
NEW YORK | Tiger Woods said Monday that he would play in the PGA Tour’s Frys.com Open in October to justify his early selection by United States captain Fred Couples for the Presidents Cup.
Last week, Couples said Woods would be one of his two wild card picks for the Nov. 17-20 team competition in Australia, though he had urged the rusty former world No. 1 to compete in at least one more event before then.
