The man who fatally shot a Virginia Tech police officer before killing himself legally obtained the handgun used in the shooting, Virginia State Police said Tuesday.
Ross Truett Ashley bought the .40-caliber semiautomatic handgun in January from a licensed Virginia gun dealer, police said. Police did not release the dealer's name.
Police also said surveillance video placed Ashley at a retail store in Blacksburg — where the Virginia Tech campus is located — on Dec. 7, the day before the shooting.
Officials said Ashley approached and shot Deriek W. Crouse while the officer made an unrelated traffic stop. Ashley later fatally turned the gun on himself.
Investigators are still searching for a motive for the killing and have found no clear-cut link connecting the two men thus far.
