Boley investigated for allegedly abusing son
GADSDEN, Ala. — Authorities are investigating a report that New York Giants linebacker Michael Boley physically abused his 5-year-old son in Gadsden, Ala., his hometown. Boley is in the third year of a five-year contract worth about $25 million.
Etowah County District Attorney Jimmie Harp said Tuesday an investigation into the allegations made by the child’s moxther has just begun and evidence will be presented to a grand jury if it’s determined there’s probable cause.
• The New England Patriots put defensive end Andre Carter on injured reserve. Tuesday’s move ends the season of the team’s leader in sacks with 10 and sidelines a key player on a struggling defense.
• The Green Bay Packers placed tackle Derek Sherrod on injured reserve and signed tackle Herb Taylor to provide offensive line depth. Sherrod, the team’s first-round pick in the 2011 draft, broke his right leg in the Packers’ loss at Kansas City on Sunday.
• Vernon Davis caught a 1-yard touchdown pass, Frank Gore ran for a 5-yard score and David Akers kicked two field goals to lead the San Francisco 49ers past the Pittsburgh Steelers 20-3 on Monday night. The game was delayed twice by power outages.
LSU’s Miles named AP coach of the year
BATON ROUGE, La. — LSU’s 2011 season will be remembered for repeatedly challenging Les Miles’ crisis-management skills. It also could go down as the greatest season in the history of a program that has existed since 1893.
Now one victory shy of an unbeaten season and a BCS national title, Miles has been voted the Associated Press Coach of the Year.
Thirty of 56 votes cast went to Miles. Bill Snyder of Kansas State was second with 16, Mike Gundy of Oklahoma State had six, Brady Hoke of Michigan got three and Lane Kiffin of Southern California had one.
• Several public health organizations are calling on the Orange Bowl and the NCAA to pull a three-year deal with Camacho Cigars, saying tobacco promotions such as the Florida cigar company’s sponsorship of the football games have no place in sports and shouldn’t be allowed under federal tobacco marketing restrictions. This year’s Orange Bowl matches Clemson against West Virginia on Jan. 4.
