D.C. police make arrest in 2008 double homicide

Metropolitan police arrested a man in D.C. Jail on Thursday in connection with a 2008 double homicide.

Arvel Crawford, 21, faces second-degree murder charges from a fatal shooting on K Street Northwest on August 14, 2008. Police found Nolan Cooper, 61, and JohnQuan Douglas Wright, 18, suffering from gunshot wounds on a sidewalk.

While Metropolitan Police Department spokesman Officer Hugh Carew confirmed that Crawford, of Southeast, was picked up from the District’s Department of Corrections on Thursday to be formally charged, he could not confirm why Crawford was in jail.

A man with the same name and age fatally shot his father during a botched robbery attempt that involved an MPD officer in 2009.

During that incident, five people planned to rob a man at gunpoint as the officer, Reginald Levester Jones, kept a lookout from his marked patrol car. When the victim fought back, Arvel Stewart Crawford shot him as well as his father.

Crawford, then 19, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and conspiracy. He was sentenced in September to 18 years in prison for that crime.

Prosecutors could not be reached Thursday evening to confirm the two Crawfords are the same person.
