CONCORDIA, Kan. (AP) — Workers at a museum in a small central Kansas town say they unearthed a letter from the wife of George Washington during a recent housecleaning.
The Jan. 27, 1793, letter from Martha Washington to her niece, Fanny Bassett Washington, was found in November at the Cloud County Historical Society Museum in Concordia. She spends most of the letter discussing family matters and concerns for relatives.
A museum employee, Marilyn Johnston, says she was rearranging the files that had been ignored for years when she noticed one in a plastic sleeve. The letter was donated in 1959 and apparently was misplaced and forgotten.
The Concordia Blade-Empire reported Wednesday that the museum will hold an open house on Feb. 19 to display the letter and celebrate Presidents Day.
