Cavin also wrote more than a dozen books, some written under the pen names Sally Brodie or Jennie Soble. Her first title came out in 1965 and anticipated the “Dummies” series.

“I had a friend who was a very good artist and a very able person, but he couldn’t cook,” she explained in 2001.

“He said to me one day, ‘I’ve taken a house with a bunch of other people and if I don’t help cook I’ll be washing dishes. I need something that says, “Walk into the kitchen, extend your right hand, grab something off the stove.’”

“So this ended up being a book. My suggested title was ‘Dinners for Beginners.’ They changed it to ‘Complete Party Dinners for the Novice Cook.’”

Cavin is survived by three children and two grandchildren.
